George Lee Richards Sr.

George Lee Richards Sr., a true “man of God,” answered his call on Feb. 20, 2018, while residing at the Lake Prince Woods Retirement Community. “Uncle George,” as he was affectionately called by so many, is survived by his loving children, George L. Richards Jr. (Diane), of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Dolly Richards Bowden (Jimmy), of Stafford; his devoted brother, Otis Richards, of Suffolk; and his grandchildren, whom he often doted on, Delano F. Lipscombe II (Crystal), Deanna R. Lipscombe, George L. Richards III, Ebony Cogdell (Brandon) and Curtis Bowden; along with four great-grandchildren, whom he adored, Trey, McKinley, Langston and Miles. He will be deeply missed by a host of relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Dolly Wilson Richards; his parents, James and Anne Richards; his sister, Ernestine Langston; his brothers, James, Alvin and Vincent Richards; and his grandchild, Paul Martin.

George was a long and faithful member of First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan St., Suffolk, where he was active for more than 80 years.

His devotion to God and county were evident in his numerous civic involvements. He served on the Suffolk Planning Commission for 25 years; served as a board member of the Suffolk Chapter of the American Cancer Society for five years; served as president of the Tidewater Fair; and was a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Mr. Richards’ homecoming service will be at noon Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at First Baptist Church 112 Mahan St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vision Project at First Baptist Church.
