Take a ride on Derby Night

The little-known nonprofit in Suffolk that does the best and most important work is probably Project Lifesaver.

Unless you or a family member has ever needed its services, there’s a good chance you haven’t heard of Project Lifesaver. But this vital organization has been around since 2004 and currently has 65 clients. The organizations outfits citizens who are likely to wander with transmitters, and every fire station in Suffolk has receivers that can track an individual’s personal signal once they are reported missing.

Most participants are children on the autism spectrum, but those with Alzheimer’s and wandering disorders also participate.

Project Lifesaver used to rely on donations to offer the service but started doing fundraisers a few years ago. One of its most popular has been Derby Night, a celebration of the Kentucky Derby that includes a chance to watch the popular horse race, participate in live and silent auctions and “bet” on horses as part of a modified 50-50 raffle.

Instead of just watching the equestrian event on television, why not watch it at a party that supports a great cause?

Even better, why not watch it with Joe Kenda? That’s right, Lt. Joe Kenda of Investigation Discovery’s television show “Homicide Hunter.” If you haven’t seen him out and about, you may not know he’s a Suffolk resident who will be featured in several of the auction items. A signed poster will be auctioned, as well as the opportunity to have him record your voicemail message. Two lucky couples will win the chance to have dinner with Kenda and his wife.

So there you have it — great food, a fun horse race, a good cause, and Joe Kenda. There’s no downside, unless of course you pick the wrong horse.

The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. May 5 at the First Lady of Suffolk, 447 W. Washington St. Tickets can be purchased at Suffolk Insurance, 202 Market St., or Fire Station 6, 300 Kings Fork Road
