Foundation awards $798K in grants

The Obici Healthcare Foundation this week announced grants totaling more than $798,000 to local organizations.

“The Obici Healthcare Foundation is pleased to announce grants awarded at over $798,000 to nine nonprofit organizations serving Western Tidewater,” said R. Scott Carr, Foundation chairman. Award amounts among the renewed grantees range from $20,062.50 to $200,000.

The Obici Healthcare Foundation is a private foundation established in 2006 when the former Louise Obici Memorial Hospital was merged into the Sentara Healthcare System. Since its inception the Foundation, has awarded more than $45 million in grant funding.

The grantees are listed below:

  • Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia — $163,071 for the Western Tidewater Dental Voucher Program, which will provide dental vouchers for financially eligible residents of Western Tidewater to receive acute dental care at participating dental clinics, health centers and private practices.
  • Eastern Virginia Medical School — $45,000 to provide access to basic health care to uninsured, Western Tidewater Free Clinic patients by engaging medical residents, third-year medical and physician assistant students.
  • Nursing CAP Inc. — $20,062.50 to tutor students in math and science and to encourage them to pursue a health care-related career path. The grant will assist students in overcoming barriers to education.
  • Sentara Obici Hospital — $48,921.75 to provide high-risk expectant families and new parents with case management and home visiting support to increase infant survival rate.
  • Southeastern Virginia Health System — $200,000 to provide access to comprehensive oral health care services for Western Tidewater residents.
  • Suffolk Meals on Wheels — $23,487.75 to provide short-term emergency meals to at-risk patients transitioning home from the hospital with one or more health issues.
  • Healthy Suffolk — $82,149 to fund policy change, community engagement, philanthropy, organizational structure, staffing, the formation of a Health Coalition and growth strategies for a culture of health in Suffolk.
  • The Up Center — $75,000 to continue providing individuals and families with trauma informed care and counseling services in Western Tidewater.
  • Western Tidewater Health District — $140,422 for the Nurse-Family Partnership Program to address high-risk, low-income, first-time pregnancies with a maternal/infant/child evidenced-based home nurse visitation service for mothers in Suffolk, Franklin and Isle of Wight County.
