The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy outdoor track and field team competed in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools championship meet Tuesday afternoon. Both teams had top-five finishes, with the boys’ team finishing fifth and the girls’ team finishing fourth.

There were standout performances on both sides for NSA, most notably the girls’ 4×400 relay team. The team of Abby Conrod, Kennedy Dryden, Emma Conrod and Maddie Miller ran a time of 4:30.22, which broke a record that had stood since 2000. Also, the relay team is very young, as it is made up of three eighth-graders and one ninth-grader.

The 4×800 team finished in third place with Abby Conrod, Frances Hope, Kathryn Hutchinson and Emma Conrod posting a time of 10:58.39. That is 24 seconds off of their previous season best, and they are now four seconds off of the school record.

The boys’ 4×800 team placed second with Holden Byrne, Jack Hutchinson, Hayden Waters and Jacob Conrod. They ran a time of 8:59.29. The 4×400 finished third with Waters, Conrod, Pope and Fenner.

“We have such a young team all around, they did an outstanding job,” Coach Karen Norman said. “We do not have any seniors on either the boys’ or girls’ team, and the majority of our teams are sophomores and younger. If they continue to display the work ethic they bring to practice every day, they are definitely on their way to realizing their goals.”

The state meet will be May 19.
