Kara Vivienne Conrad (née Symons) was born in Braunton, Devonshire, England, Nov. 18, 1940, to her parents, Vyvyan R. and Sybil C. Symons (née Clarke). Kara passed away suddenly at 5:44 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018, in Sentara Obici Hospital.

She leaves behind her husband, Dennis R. Conrad, of Suffolk; sister, Heather Tomasek (Lee), of Stuart, Fla.; sons, Paul Rooney (Susan), of Virginia Beach, and Brian Rooney, of Key West, Fla.

The Symons family moved to St. Vincent, and the sisters, who were in their teens, managed a hotel in Barbados. Kara married Ralph Rooney, had two sons and divorced Mr. Rooney nine years later. She lived in Key West in the 1970s and was an advertising agent for the Key West Citizen newspaper. A Realtor in Hampton Roads for more than 40 years, she started in 1977 at Landmark Realtors and worked for a variety of firms such as Marshall Ewald, Rose and Krueth, the Allen Company and Century Realty. She was the on-site agent at Walnut Hills Estates in Suffolk during the 1980s and 1990s. Kara enjoyed traveling and cruises; from her second husband’s hometown of Kutztown, Pa., for the Kutztown Folk Festival to the Oktoberfest in Helen, Ga., to the Appalachian Mountains, to the sands of Key West, Fla., and her favorite spot on earth, Bermuda!

Kara had an advance directive that stated her remains are to be cremated and no memorial held, so no memorial services are planned. Kara will be missed by all who knew her. The family is being assisted by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory. Condolences may be offered at RWBakerFH.com.
