Suffolk’s 23rd annual Relay for Life is set for this Friday after bad weather delayed the affair from its original May date.

There’s a 40-percent chance of rain in Suffolk this Friday, according to weather.com, but the event will go ahead as planned rain or shine, according to community development manager Tara Asare.

“My event leadership committee has put in a ton of hard work to make this as amazing as it can possibly be, and I’m expecting to have an incredible event,” Asare said in a phone interview Monday.

The event will take place at Nansemond River High School, 3301 Nansemond Parkway, from 6 p.m. to midnight. There are 49 teams registered for the Relay as of Monday with more than 350 total participants, Asare said. The evening will have bounce houses, pony rides, live music and plenty of other entertainment.

Knockerball of Virginia Beach will be at the school along with a rock wall for climbing. Seven City Dinos will bring a life-size dinosaur character and give attendees the chance to dig for fossils.

The Joe Gosman Band is the headlining performance this year and will be joined by DJ Jay Dum, Paul Jarman and the Little Saints and Calvin Simmons and the GSC.

The Survivor Lap will immediately follow the opening ceremony around 6:15 p.m. This gives survivors and their families a chance to take a solo lap around the track. A special luminaria ceremony will begin around 9:30 p.m., and the closing ceremony will be at 11:30 p.m.

All Relay proceeds will go toward its fundraising goal of $150,000, which sits at about $87,352 as of Monday. Fundraising will continue into September. Mike Duman Auto Sales on Godwin Boulevard will also donate $10 to the American Cancer Society for every test drive this Friday and Saturday, both at the Friday event and the car dealership.

“We’re actually a little bit ahead of where we were last year, so I think we’re going to do really, really good as far as fundraising this year,” Asare said.

Teams and individuals can register for the Relay up to the Friday start time. Visit relayforlife.org/suffolkva or facebook.com/SuffolkRelay for updates, registration and other information.
