Ruritans raising money to help firefighter

The Suffolk Ruritan Club is ready to cook up some flavorful grilling staples in order to raise money and help Fire Department Battalion Chief Andre Durham, who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident earlier this year.

The cooks will fire up the grill for delicious pork butt and juicy rib slabs cooked with hickory chips and served with a crowd-pleasing secret sauce. The ribs will be $20 per slab and $25 for each pork butt, with enough for about 200 orders, according to club member E.C. Harris.

Durham has been with Suffolk Fire and Rescue for nearly 26 years, but his motorcycle accident in January removed him from active duty. Local emergency responders have come together to offset Durham’s medical expenses.

“We’re just trying to do something to help,” Harris said.

The deadline for orders is June 27. Orders will then be picked up from 2 to 4 p.m. June 30 at 1341 River Road. Call 630-2979 or 434-9240 to place an order or visit facebook.com/shrimpfeast for more information.
