A North Suffolk roadway was closed briefly Thursday evening after a citizen spotted an industrial tanker truck leaking an unknown substance onto the roadway.

The incident was reported at 8:25 p.m. after the truck pulled out of a parking lot near the intersection of Bridge Road and Harbour View Boulevard, according to a city press release. The truck did not remain on the scene.

The roadway was closed “out of an abundance of caution,” the release stated.

State hazardous materials officials responded to determine the nature of the chemical. They identified it as calcium carbonate, a chemical used to clean up tar after paving operations, the press release stated. The chemical dissipates on its own, so the roadway was reopened about 9:40 p.m.
