Read for slime and prizes this summer

Starting today, Suffolk readers can work together to finish 8,000 books to potentially win a grand prize, along with the chance to slime some of Suffolk Public Library’s finest.

The Camp Suffolk Public Library Summer Reading Challenge will have patrons turning pages to reach their goal by Aug. 4. The challenge is open to everyone and doesn’t require a library card.

Readers will track progress using Beanstack, the same online platform used in the Winter Reading Challenge held by software company Zoobean and “Shark Tank” billionaire investor Mark Cuban. Suffolk crushed Winter’s 3,000-book goal, and the library hopes for the same enthusiasm this summer, library services coordinator Shawna LoMonaco said.

The Friends of the Suffolk Public Library provided a grand prize for the Summer Reading Challenge. Participants will earn one raffle ticket per book logged, and one winner will choose a grand prize worth up to $500, according to the press release.

The list includes a one-night stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg; an annual family membership to the Virginia Zoo, Children’s Museum of Virginia and Virginia Aquarium; a fitness bundle with a Planet Fitness membership for two; a Williamsburg Winery visit and stay for two or a Suffolk staycation package.

Furthermore, if 8,000 books are logged by the deadline, then participants will get to slime three Suffolk Public Library staff members at the Grand Finale Carnival that will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at the vacant lot at the corner of West Washington Street and Lee Street.

“Most Wanted” photos of library staff will be posted on the library’s Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the carnival. People will then vote online for the three “best” to get slimed. Staff are looking forward to it with Nickelodeon flashbacks, LoMonaco said.

Participants can log into Beanstack with their existing account from the winter challenge or create new accounts. The Beanstack app can be downloaded for Android or iPhone to make logging easier, or log their books at the Chuckatuck, Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk Library locations.
