After a strong freshman season in college, one former Nansemond River High School standout had a better sophomore season.

Former Lady Warrior Calah Savage is a couple of weeks removed from finishing up her sophomore year for the Christopher Newport University softball team. She helped lead CNU to a 37-10 record. Out of 92 at-bats, she had 35 hits, six doubles and five home runs along with eight runs scored.

“I felt like my sophomore season was a lot easier for me, since I had previous experience as a freshman,” Savage said. “I knew how some of the pitchers were going to throw at me, and I felt like offensively and defensively I played better, so I am happy with my performance overall.”

Because of a strong sophomore campaign, she was selected first team All-Conference. Savage was happy for the honor, but her main goals this season were to maintain a good batting average and maintain her responsibilities behind the plate as a catcher.

CNU made the NCAA Division III tournament this season but was eliminated by champions Virginia Wesleyan University in regionals. Savage felt like they could have made it further as a team, but she was part of this 2018 team that broke records. They broke school records for the most runs scored, RBIs, doubles and total bases this year.

The former Lady Warrior hasn’t given too much thought to her junior season yet, but she is hoping to help CNU to a national title.

“We could have gone further this year, but sometimes it doesn’t work out,” she said. “We still tried our best, and hopefully we have better luck next year. I’m hoping to make a national championship.”

At Nansemond River, Savage was an All-Conference, All-Region and All-State selection and helped NRHS to multiple conference titles.
