Thomas Palmer Johnson, Jr. died Friday, June 22, 2018. He was 83.

Born and raised in Chesapeake, he was the son of Thomas Palmer Johnson and Charlotte Hall Johnson.

He leaves his wife of 37 years, Doris P. Johnson; his sons, Thomas P. Johnson III and Craig L. Johnson and his wife, Joanna B. Johnson; his daughter, Dawn A. Schenk, and her husband, Brain Schenk; grandsons, David P. Johnson and significant other, Joey Depaola, Jack L. Johnson, Delano B. Johnson; and his beloved dog Maggy. He is also survived by the mother of his two sons, June B. Johnson.

He graduated from Virginia Tech and was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. For years, he was an active member of the Bethlehem Christian Church, serving as a deacon and member of the Men’s Fellowship. He was also active in the Bethlehem Ruritan Club. An avid sports fan, he coached many Little League teams in multiple sports during his early adulthood. A pet lover, he also volunteered for the Suffolk Humane Society. He loved attending the “Highway Department Retiree Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club” and catching up with old friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2018, at Bethlehem Christian Church, 1549 Holland Road, Suffolk, VA 23434, with a reception following in the Graham Hall. The family is being served by R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory. Condolences may be offered at RWBakerFH.com.
