A new paving project will be happening at State Route 164 beginning July 2018, according to Virginia Department of Transportation.

Five segments of the Western Freeway, both eastbound and westbound, will be repaved. The segments are in the cities of Suffolk and Portsmouth.

All five sections have a scheduled completion date of Dec. 17, 2018, but there is no specific end date for any of the individual sections, according to VDOT spokeswoman Paula Miller.

VDOT does not have a specific time scheduled for when they plan to complete the work.

“The contractor is allowed to work day and night during low traffic volume times to reduce the impact to traffic. The majority of the work will take place at night,” Miller said in an email.

To complete the work, the contractor will close off one lane at a time, and there should be minimal effect on the traffic pattern, Miller said.
