The idea for Kelly’s Choice Inc. came to Edwina “Winnie” Wilson in a dream, and now she is making sure that the Suffolk community has inclusive events for the disabled.

Kelly’s Choice Inc. will have its Free to Be Me event this Saturday. The event is a fashion show, dance and social all wrapped into one afternoon.

“I’ve lived in Suffolk since 2012, and I wanted to do something here and start to bring the things we do in Suffolk,” Wilson said.

The event is going to be held at the Hub 757, and Wilson really wants the event to be something the whole community can be involved in.

There will be a professional coming to do the cha-cha and other types of dances with those attending, but there is a chance for those that want to hang out and just socialize.

“I really want it to be a community gathering,” Wilson said.

The event started as just a fashion show, but a representative from Aetna suggested adding the dance and the social.

“I thought it was a great idea and we decided to do it,” Wilson said. “I felt like it was needed and it’s important to have the social aspect in the community.”

Kelly’s Choice Inc. is named after Kelly Wilson, Winnie’s daughter, who was born with cerebral palsy. Kelly, 32, requires constant care, and Wilson has been her caregiver for her entire life. Having a child with disabilities has given Wilson the opportunity to give back to her community.

“God gave her to me and chose me to raise her and mold her,” Wilson said. “Here we are 32 years later, and she is everywhere in the community. I want to keep her involved because inclusion is important to me.”

Wilson is always thinking about ways to involve Kelly in the community and thinking about what she would like to do.

“I always think about what would work for her and what will work for everyone else,” Wilson said.

This is one of many events that Kelly’s Choice Inc. has put on for the Hampton Roads community. The first event Wilson put on was a Caregivers Recognition Gala, and there were 250 people in attendance to honor 50 caregivers in the community.

“It blessed my soul to see the caregivers and hear their different stories,” Wilson said. “You never know what people are going through and what their journey is like.”

The event is open to all ages, and the event will be fully accessible to everyone that attends. The event is free, but those attending should RSVP on Eventbrite.com.

The fashion show and dance will be from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hub 757, 6801 Bridgeway Drive.
