Families can come to downtown Suffolk this Saturday for an early start on red, white and blue festivities courtesy of Suffolk Public Library and company.
Morgan Memorial Library, 443 W. Washington St., will host its third annual Pre-Fourth of July Cookout from noon to 3 p.m. The forecast as of Thursday is a mix of sunshine, clouds and a high of 94 degrees in the afternoon.
The free event will feature burgers, hotdogs and plenty of sides on a first-come, first-served basis via meal tickets in a lot filled with entertainment. Suffolk firefighters will arrive in one of their fire trucks for the kids to take a closer look. Families will also enjoy cornhole, giant Jenga and other outdoor games.
Children will get their faces painted and have the chance to win raffle and contest prizes. The Library2Go mobile will be parked outside Morgan Memorial for the kids, along with an outdoor story time session with library staffer Deborah Ward.
“We’ll sing some ‘Yankee Doodle’ and ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag’ to make it a patriotic glory time,” Ward said.
The library will also be accepting donations for the ForKids organization. Suggested donation items include nonperishable food, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products and other toiletries.
Last year’s event drew about 300 people, and the line for food starts right at noon. Additional parking will be available across the street behind city hall. Visit suffolkpubliclibrary.com for more information.
