An investigation of what was reported to be a “military-grade explosive device” inside a home on Wilroy Road Thursday evening closed the road for a couple of hours and brought representatives from Suffolk Fire & Rescue, the Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office, the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad and the U.S. Navy.

The verdict? An airsoft claymore device, used in the sport of airsoft, where players shoot BBs at one another. The airsoft claymore device, according to airsoftmegastore.com, can explode by remote control and release hundreds of BBs at once.

It is designed to look similar to an anti-personnel mine developed for the U.S. Armed Forces, including the words “Front Toward Enemy” on its side.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink stated that the device was found by someone cleaning out the house.

The device was reported at 5:11 p.m. from the 1300 block of Wilroy Road, a press release stated.

The road was closed in both directions from Suburban Drive to River Creek Drive.

Once the device was identified, it was deemed safe to transport by the Navy, and the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad removed it, according to the press release.

The road reopened at 7:30 p.m.
