The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame is accepting applications for its 14th annual Student Athlete Achievement Awards.

The Hall’s Education Foundation is looking for high school juniors and seniors from across the state that excel on the field, in the classroom and in their communities, according to a press release.

The application period has begun and runs through Oct. 19. Only rising high school juniors and seniors are eligible.

Student-athletes may submit an application themselves or be nominated by a family member, coach, administrator or mentor, the press release stated. Individuals completing the application will be asked to include details and references that support the student’s achievements in each of the areas of focus — academic, athletic and civic. Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted through the online application, which can be found at www.VaSportsHOF.com.

Once all applications are received, 16 finalists will be chosen by the Student Athlete Achievement Awards Selection Committee to attend an awards reception Dec. 2, 2018, in Virginia Beach. Of those 16, four will be named Student Athletes of the Year and will receive scholarship awards.

“The Student Athlete Achievement Awards is an excellent platform to honor high school student-athletes from across the state,” said Hall of Fame President Eddie Webb. “It is exciting to see the impact these young people have had in their schools and communities.”

In 2017, the Hall received more than 100 applications. Finalists included the No. 1 high school girls’ basketball recruit in the country for the Class of 2019, a female golfer whose talent has allowed her to compete in both boys’ and girls’ state competitions, a student-athlete who has aspirations of running for president, multiple Eagle Scouts, and numerous young people who have trained with U.S. National Team programs.
