Whaleyville United Methodist Church will be bringing the community together for a block party again this summer.

“This is the fourth year we have had the block party,” said church outreach coordinator Scott Anderson. “We just try to do something to bring the community together. It’s also a good outreach for the church.”

While the party will have all the normal elements, food and play, there will also be local craft vendors selling items.

“We will have someone selling stained glass, someone selling Thirty-One, someone selling custom bags, and there will be a local artist from Whaleyville selling their artwork,” Anderson said.

The party will have a little something for everyone. There will be bounce houses, sack races and cornhole for the community.

Anderson will be manning the grill, but he is happy to be there providing food for everyone in attendance.

“I enjoy cooking and having the community come together,” Anderson said.

The cookout will have hamburgers and hotdogs, and all the food is free. The church will take donations, but there is no cost to eat and enjoy the block party.

In years past, the block party has had about 50 to 60 people coming. Anderson thinks there will be more people this year.

“It might be bigger than last year, because every year it seems to grow,” Anderson said.

Whaleyville is part of the southern part of Suffolk that is much more rural, but that is what gives it its charm, according to Anderson.

“We are a nice rural community, and it is nice to come together and have fun with my neighbors,” Anderson said.

The block party will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 21 at the church, 6312 Whaleyville Blvd.
