Powdery substance evacuates store
A powdery substance leaking from a box dropped off at a local UPS Store was identified Saturday as a dietary supplement.
Suffolk firefighters and police officers responded Saturday morning to the UPS Store in the 1000 block of Centerbrooke Lane on a call about an unknown white powdery substance, according to a city press release.
They were contacted at 11:44 a.m. after staff observed the powder leaking from a box that was dropped off by a customer for shipment, the release stated.
The preliminary investigation determined the substance was likely non-hazardous, the press release stated, and no one exposed to the substance showed any ill effects.
However, a state hazardous materials representative was on the way to the scene as a precaution, and the office was evacuated.
Emergency crews cleared the scene before 2 p.m. after it was determined the substance was a dietary supplement.
