Netting ducks and prizes this Friday

Families can enjoy live music, games and the chance to pick a winning duck this Friday while they learn more about what’s in store for National Night Out this August.

The National Night Out Duck Pluck will take place during the first break of the Deloreans’ live concert beginning at 6 p.m. at Bennett’s Creek Park for Suffolk Parks and Recreation’s TGIF Concert Series.

There will be more than 200 ducks up for grabs, each corresponding to a potentially winning raffle ticket for first-, second- and third-place winners to receive “family fun” prizes, Suffolk National Night Out Chairman Diana Klink said.

“We’ll have a child volunteer with a cute National Night Out net to pluck the ducks from the pool,” she said.

National Night Out is an annual event set for Aug. 7 that encourages neighbors to fight crime by getting to know one another and by building relationships with local law enforcement.

As of Monday, there are more than 80 community partnerships and businesses registered to participate, according to Klink, and each will celebrate in its unique way, from small cookouts to much bigger parties with children’s games, music and other entertainment. The deadline for registration is this Sunday.

The National Night Out tent at Bennett’s Creek Park this Friday evening will have staff to answer questions about this year’s celebrations, along with handouts on planned parties in Suffolk.

“It gives us the opportunity to advise people on the National Night Out parties that are closest to them,” Klink said.
