Part of East Washington Street will be closed due to work on the railroad later this week.

The closure will take place between Portsmouth Boulevard and Philhower Drive from 6 a.m. Wednesday until 6 p.m. Friday.

The railroad crossing between Portsmouth Boulevard and Philhower Drive on East Washington Street will be replaced to improve the ride over the rails, according to a press release.

“The existing asphalt surface will be replaced with concrete panels and should result in an improved ride over the rails and less maintenance required at the crossing,” spokeswoman Diana Klink said via email.

CSX will be performing the work at the request of the city of Suffolk.

The work schedule and closure duration are dependent on the weather and other factors, according to the press release.
