Edward “Ed” Carlton Story, 80, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend, went home to his Lord for a well-deserved rest on Friday, July 27, 2018. Ed was born to parents Rufus Edward Story and Lizzie Hill Story on Dec. 11, 1937, in Newsoms, where he grew up the eldest of three children.
Ed graduated from Newsoms High School in 1955 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, from which he received an honorable discharge after four years of service. In 1962, Ed married Alice Paige Powell, of Franklin, with whom he raised their four children and spent 39 happy years before her passing.
Ed had a highly successful career as an insurance agent for which he received many awards. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing, bird-watching and golfing. Ed loved watching sports, especially baseball and his beloved New York Yankees, which he shared with friends and family.
Ed moved numerous times during his life before settling in Carrsville, where he met his long-time companion, Ann Williams. Ann and Ed were an adventurous couple, taking many trips and fishing excursions. Ann was Ed’s first call each morning and last call each evening, and she was by his side in his final days.
Ed is survived by his children, Joy B. Lambert and her husband, Ed Lambert, of Summerville, S.C., Robert Gary Benton, of Newport News, Carl Fitzgerald Story, of Williamsburg, and Tracy Story Brooks and her husband, Dodd Brooks, of Suffolk; grandchildren, Lt. Charles “Chuck” Reed and wife, Heather, Elizabeth Paige Lambert, Allyson Paige Story and Sara Paige Brooks; niece, Barbara “Bobbie Jo” Story; nephew, Lawrence Benjamin “Larry Jr.” Story; niece, Mary Katherine Mawyer King, her husband, Don Alan King, and great-niece Eva.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Paige Powell Story; his parents, Rufus and Lizzie Story; his brother, Lawrence Benjamin Story; and his sister, Diane Mawyer.
A special thank you to Celestine Blow for her loving care and support of Ed and his family during this time.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, at Wright Funeral Home in Franklin. Ed will be laid to rest at Hollywood Cemetery in Newsoms.
