After spending some time at Norfolk State University, Mike Parmentier is getting comfortable at a different college.
Parmentier spent the 2018 baseball season with the Old Dominion University Monarchs. In 2017, he was on hand for the Spartans. But Parmentier graduated early from NSU, making way for his transfer to Old Dominion. He had two seasons left of eligibility to play at the time of the transfer.
He is currently in the master’s program at ODU, while also still being able to play NCAA Division I baseball. Parmentier graduated in the fall and made his way to ODU in the spring.
A transition like that could be uncomfortable. It took a lot of adjusting for Parmentier, although he had known a few guys there from playing with them.
“They were very open and welcoming,” he said. “After meeting everyone, the transition was easier.”
Unfortunately for Parmentier, he couldn’t get much going last season. He had surgery in the middle of the season and then suffered another injury that set him back. However, Parmentier is fully healthy right now.
“It’s always tough not being able to go out there and compete,” he said. “As a new guy coming in, you want to be able to show everyone what you got and not being able to do it was tough.”
ODU had a tough year overall dealing with injuries, but Parmentier wants to make sure he remains focused on staying healthy throughout the rest of his career.
Parmentier pitched in a total of 44 games during his three-year career with the Spartans. He had a career ERA of 3.81 and six saves.
As a junior, he pitched in 10 games with a 3.24 ERA and two saves. As a sophomore, he was named second team All-MEAC after appearing in 22 games with a 4.12 ERA and four saves. In his freshman year, he pitched in 12 games with five starts, going 3-1 with a 3.49 ERA.
At Nansemond River High School, he was an All-Conference and All-Region performer. On the mound, he helped the Warriors to a conference tournament championship and helped them clinch regionals. During his senior year, he went 8-1 with a 1.86 ERA.
