An angel at 104

It was a full house in the Maryview Nursing Care Center for Ruby Mason’s 104th birthday on Thursday.
Almost 50 of Mason’s family and friends gathered together to make sure that yet another birthday was just as special as the rest.
“I look over her years and think about what an eternity will be with You. We are so blessed to celebrate 104 years on earth,” Sonny Mason, her eldest son, prayed before they all enjoyed the cake.
Five of Mason’s eight children were able to attend the party, and all of them couldn’t help but be amazed at the amazing years they have had with their mother.
“She’s the best woman in the world, and she was always working hard. I don’t think we realized what she sacrificed for us,” her son Jimmy Mason said. “She always has a smile on her face.”
As each one of her children reminisced about their time growing up with their mother, they remembered one thing – she was selfless.
“Her and God walk hand in hand,” Jimmy said. “She’s the sweetest thing in the whole and she has never complained. If there’s ever an angel on earth, it’s her.”
Her kindness extended far past her family even in her younger days.
“She’s always been so thoughtful. One year she canned 400 cans and gave some of them to the local orphanage,” Sonny Mason said. “If you came to the house you didn’t leave without something she gave you.”
Throughout the party, Ruby Mason could just be seen smiling as people came by to hug her and give her well wishes. While she didn’t say much, her smile told its own story.
She knew that there was an entire room filled with people that loved her and plenty of others that loved her that just weren’t able to make it.
Including her kids, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, Mason has 86 direct descendants, and each one of them loves her.
They love her because her love for them has been unconditional since they day she had her first child.
Her children can remember her hand washing clothes on a scrub board until her fingers bled to make sure the chores got done in the house.
“She was fantastic, and we couldn’t have had a better mother. She used to wash our clothes on the scrub board and didn’t complain about it once,” said her son Larry Dean Mason.
It touched her son David’s heart to know she did that for all eight kids, herself and her husband.
David Mason was brought to tears remembering when he was able to buy his mother a washing machine for the first time.
Her 104th birthday was a momentous occasion and everyone couldn’t believe she had made it this far. For some, she was the longest living person they knew.
Though, not everyone was sure that Mason would make it to triple digits. She had a massive stroke in 2011, but after some time healing and physical therapy, she is doing just fine.
Her family is looking forward to celebrating many more birthdays with her.
