Suffolk native Luke Williamson was able to have some good moments at the Hoop Group Future All-American camp last week.
The goal of Hoop Group is to provide the next generation of serious basketball players the feel of a big-time exposure camp while helping them reach their basketball goals. It gives younger players a chance to learn and expand their game, all while competing against the great players in their age group.
Williamson, who will be a sophomore at Nansemond River High School this year, was grouped with the ninth- and 10th-graders. The camp consisted of three days, and on the second day, Williamson was mentioned as a standout.
“During our afternoon sweatshop, Williamson’s hard work and determination stood out. He was one of the few players that wanted to be there and get better. During the drills, he was asked to demonstrate for everyone and did not falter. One can admire the perseverance from this player,” Kaitlyn Fedor wrote.
Williamson said he got great exposure from the camp and was thankful for his time there.
“Overall, I feel like I made a good impression out there,” Williamson said. “I was pretty proud of myself that I was able to make some noise out there. It’s no doubt one of the best camps I’ve been to.”
The summer has been going well for the Warrior. He has been to a couple of camps this season, and he finished his AAU season strong. With fall approaching, it is the preseason time for basketball. Williamson is looking forward to continuing to get better to make an impact next season.
“I’m always looking forward to getting better mentally and physically,” he said. “I am going to pretty much be in the gym from now until the winter. I’m looking forward to making even more noise this year.”
The Warrior is hoping his strong summer will lead to him making an impact on the boys’ basketball team. Last season, he spent time on the JV team, but he hopes his summer momentum can help him make an immediate impact on the varsity level.
