The city will begin accepting bids on Sept. 21 to make repairs to a landmark mausoleum in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
“The Hill Mausoleum has got some concrete that is falling off the side of the roof, and we need to fix it before it gets to a point where it is leaking,” said Cemetery Superintendent Sheril Davenport. “We want to get it repaired as soon as we can.”
The city isn’t sure exactly how much the repairs are going to cost, but they have heard estimates ranging from $20,000 to as high as $50,000.
“At this point, we aren’t sure, since we haven’t seen any proposals,” Davenport said. “We’ve had low and high quotes, it just depends.”
The repairs needed for the mausoleum don’t happen often.
“It’s once in a blue moon. I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years, and this is the first time we’ve ever had to do this,” Davenport said.
Damage to the mausoleum has been slowly happening for a while now, but they’ve decided to act before it gets too bad to fix.
“We’ve been noticing it for a while, but it’s to a point now to have something done. It’s just been more noticeable now, and it’s got to be fixed before it gets to a point where it can’t be fixed,” Davenport said.
Construction on the mausoleum, after the city have accepted the bid, won’t close down the cemetery.
“It will remain open the entire time, and only a road or two will have to detour,” Davenport said.
Depending on the weather, the construction will take 30 to 60 days.
