Society sale set for Saturday

Friends and families enjoying the Taste of Suffolk festivities on Saturday can talk a walk down Bank Street for an eclectic sale of trinkets, antiques and other wares at the Philips-Dawson House.
Members and volunteers with the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society will hold the society’s annual sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Philips-Dawson House, 137 Bank St. The sale has helped raise money for the society’s operating costs since 2008 when it was first called the “heirloom sale,” according to board member and sale coordinator Hazel White.
“Then we began to realize that we needed to have more, so now we have heirlooms and ‘stuff,’” she said.
That ‘stuff’ will be displayed on tables, shelves and walls throughout the house on Saturday, all donated by the society’s 300 or so members, according to Executive Director Kimberly Blair Greene.
The collection includes furniture and artwork in a wide range of styles, including a pair of framed watercolors painted on silk. There’s ruby glassware, silver and a table of holiday-themed toys and decorations for early Christmas prep.
There’s also an antique Hoosier cabinet, a free-standing kitchen cabinet that doubles as a workstation. White pulled on the handles to reveal the flower bin and drawers. She called it a “kitchen-in-one.”
“There’s something for everyone, and the proceeds of course go to the society’s endeavors,” she said.
The society’s mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and promote the history and culture of Suffolk and the former Nansemond County for both current and future generations. The operating budget covers the costs of archival materials and maintenance of the house facilities.
That includes the lecture room where many historical talks take place. Speakers stand in front of the lobby card board that was once in the lobby of Suffolk’s Chadwick Theatre, which stood just a block away from the Phillips-Dawson House.
And no, it’s not for sale, White said.
“I keep teasing that we’re going to sell this marquee,” she said with a laugh.
