A park in downtown Suffolk will be dedicated in honor of the late Andrew B. Damiani at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The city announced the ceremony will take place at the park located at the southwest corner of Main and Washington streets in downtown Suffolk. The area, commonly known as “Character Corner” due to the Mr. Peanut statue there, will now be known as Damiani Square, with Character Corner being part of Damiani Square.

A plaque with the name Damiani Square will be placed at that location during the ceremony.

Damiani, a World War II veteran, businessman, downtown champion, former city councilman and mayor, died Aug. 5, 2017, at the age of 95.

City Council voted last October to approve the recognition.

Wednesday’s event is open to the public.
