The golf season is over for Nansemond River High School, and the Warriors golf team fell just short of qualifying for the Class 5 Region A tournament.

Entering this season, the Warriors had a relatively young team. A lot of the players were playing high school golf for the first time. Nansemond River finished with a 4-7 record, narrowly missing out on regionals.

“I think the season went well,” Coach Brandon Frye said. “The kids did well. They all just started out playing, and we have some good things to build on.”

This year, at least for Class 5 Region A, there were changes to the regional qualifications. Last year, every team qualified for the regional tournament. This season, only eight teams from the region qualified. Teams put together their five best scores of the season and the eight teams with the top qualifying scores advanced. Nansemond River barely missed the cut, placing ninth.

“I’m pleased with the golf our team played,” Frye said. “Just a little disappointed in the format and how everything goes. It’s just less golf for the kids. But I’m proud of what our kids did.”

There was more teaching and learning involved with Frye and his team this year. He saw his team continue to make strides each match. As a coach, Frye often told his players not to get too excited or too disappointed about whatever happened out on the course.

“As a golfer myself, that’s how I approach the game,” Frye said. “Don’t get too high or get too low. They are continuing to learn, which is good.”

Frye is looking forward to what he has returning as well as what he will add next season.
