The Nansemond River High School girls’ volleyball team took down one of its rivals on the road Monday night.

The Lady Warriors and Lady Cavs met this week for the first time this season. Nansemond River came out victorious over its cross-town rival Lakeland High School 3-0.

It was a good way to start the week for a Nansemond River team that has three games scheduled this week.

The Lady Warriors are currently 2-0 against their rivals. There is still one more game each to play against the King’s Fork and Lakeland before the season is over. Nansemond River took the first set 25-13. Lakeland fought back in the second set, but Nansemond River took that one 25-17. For the final set, the Lady Warriors won 25-14.

Natalie Hawkins was the Player of the Match with five aces and four kills. The Lady Warriors felt like this was the right time to get a win they needed.

“It felt great,” senior Taylor Paquette said. “I feel like the team really needed that win, and hopefully it will give us the drive to win the rest of our games this week.”

The key for the Lady Warriors is to continue to communicate. That worked well for them in their win Monday night, and a win like that could continue to push them in the right direction. Lakeland has been unable to get a win this season.

Nansemond River will face Indian River High School at home at 6 p.m. Thursday. Lakeland will face Great Bridge High School at home at 6 p.m. Thursday.
