Michael hits with wind, warnings

Tropical Storm Michael blew into Hampton Roads with a bang on Thursday afternoon and evening, knocking out power and bringing thunderstorms that meteorologists said were capable of producing tornadoes.
After striking Florida’s Panhandle region as a very strong Category 4 storm on Wednesday, the storm trekked quickly across the Southeast and hit Hampton Roads throughout Thursday afternoon and evening.
Tornado warnings were issued just after 3 p.m. and then again at 5:45 p.m. City spokeswoman Diana Klink and National Weather Service Wakefield Chief Meteorologist Jeff Orrock said there were no confirmed touchdowns of tornadoes during either warning.
During the earlier warning, which happened during school dismissal time, middle and high school buses that were already on the road went to the nearest school and sheltered in the school, Suffolk Public Schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said. Elementary buses were not loaded until the warning expired, and students and staff in all buildings took shelter, Bradshaw said.
Parents waiting to pick up elementary students were encouraged to come into the building until the warning was lifted, she added.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, more than 100 Dominion Energy customers were out of power. Ten were near downtown, and 95 were in North Suffolk’s Cedar Point community. The larger outage was due to a downed power line, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.
Orrock said rain would continue to hit Suffolk throughout Thursday evening.
“We’re going to get maybe 3 inches of rain out of this,” he said.
He expected wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour during the nighttime and early morning hours.
“By the time folks get up and go to work in the morning, it’s still going to be pretty windy,” he said. “It should be winding down by lunchtime.”
A flash flood watch remained in effect through Friday morning. Flash flooding was particularly likely in areas of poor drainage and near creeks, streams and ditches. Street flooding was also considered likely.
