A Suffolk man recently was sentenced to serve 53 years in prison for rape and other charges.

Martrell Dae’Shawn Beamon, 19, was charged with rape, sodomy, abduction with intent to defile and three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

The assault happened on Sept. 18, 2016. A woman told police she was walking home from work near East Washington Street when Beamon pointed a gun at her and sexually assaulted her.

DNA from the scene was matched to Beamon, according to testimony and court records.

But before he could sentence Beamon on Oct. 1, Circuit Court Judge Robert H. Sandwich Jr. had to make a decision on an alleged recantation submitted by Beamon’s attorney, Steven Washington.

The victim had testified she wrote the recantation at the direction of the defense attorney.

“The judge found the recantation testimony was made under pressure and duress and therefore he did not believe the recantation to be true,” prosecutor Marie Walls said.

Washington did not return a message seeking comment.

Beamon’s mother and aunt testified on his behalf at the sentencing hearing, and Beamon also spoke and denied he did anything wrong, Walls said.
