SCA falls in semifinals

With one game left in the season, Suffolk Christian Academy’s girls’ volleyball team has pretty much wrapped up its 2018 season.
The Lady Knights competed in the conference tournament last week. They took their quarterfinal game against Great Bridge Christian Academy, which set them up for a semifinal matchup against Beach School, where they lost.
Going into the tournament, Coach Scott Cornette and the Lady Knights knew their backs were up against the wall; however, they competed well.
“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked, but the girls competed hard,” Cornette said. “We still have a way to go, and we have made strides this season, so we have to improve on that.”
SCA has one more game left against Greenbrier Christian Academy on the road. It is going to be a tough game for the Lady Knights, who lost 3-0 in the first meeting. Cornette is confident the Lady Knights will finish strong in their last game.
“Some of these ladies had a bitter taste in their mouths after last game and are eager to get back on the court,” he said. “These girls want to come back on the court to show that they still have a fire in them.”
Despite their record not being where they want, SCA has made significant improvement over the course of the year. Last season, the team only won one game. This season, the team has four wins and has won 20 sets. Their quarterfinal win in the conference tournament last week was also a first and another step in the right direction for SCA.
“All these things the girls accomplished this season was a testament to what I had seen in them all along,” Cornette said. “It was rewarding watching them accomplish all of these things. Now it’s just about them building on what they have accomplished going forward.”
The Lady Knights did have two players recognized in the conference this season. Kaitlyn Brittingham and Heather Pearson were both All-Conference selections. Brittingham was a first-team selection, while Pearson was a second-team selection. Brittingham was a senior captain this year. Pearson is a junior and will be returning next season.
“We are very proud of those ladies,” Cornette said. “The fact the other teams in the conference noticed their hard work is great.”
