Local candidates raising, spending
Published 10:03 pm Wednesday, October 31, 2018
The only contested City Council race has seen a large financial disparity between the two candidates with the election just days away.
This story covers all financial activity for this campaign leading up to the Nov. 6 election.
Suffolk Borough incumbent Donald Goldberg has raised $19,559 for the election while his opponent Art Bredemeyer raised $4,573 since Jan. 1.
Almost $5,000 of Goldberg’s contributions have come from construction companies or from partners at these construction companies.
He has received contributions from the Tidewater Builders Association, Armada Hoffler and the president of Beco Construction, among others.
Bredemeyer has also received contributions from real estate companies and contractors including Civic Spirit LLC, Robert Babb and AT and K LLC, but his largest contribution came from a funeral home company, Honoring NC Lives LLC.
The funding difference between candidates extends to the four contested School Board races with Thelma Hinton, Sherri Story, Karen Jenkins and Lorita Mayo raising more money than their respective opponents.
Both Tim Johnson, incumbent councilman for Holy Neck, and Sonya Allen, Holy Neck candidate for School Board, filed with the Virginia Department of Elections to be exempt from reporting requirements. This allowed them not to file as long as they did not intend to raise or spend more than $1,000 during the campaign.
All numbers have been rounded to the nearest dollar.
