A local Mexican restaurant and a nearby church and food pantry will partner this Sunday to invite folks for a Thanksgiving feast.

Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center and El Korita Restaurante are preparing to feed their neighbors from 2 to 3 p.m. this Sunday at the outreach center, 211 E. Washington St.

Lorna Slaughter, co-founder and operations officer for the fellowship center, said she does a special soup kitchen feeding for Thanksgiving every year anyway.

She said Linda Pena of El Korita, which is located across the street, came over one day and asked about partnering on the event.

“We may have two completely different organizations or entities, but we are like-minded when it comes to community, and I’m excited about that,” Slaughter said.

Slaughter said she has already told many of the food pantry’s regular clients about the partnership.

“That excited them, because they’re looking forward to a bit of a twist on our traditional Thanksgiving meal,” Slaughter said.

Pena, of El Korita, said the restaurant will prepare several different types of chicken, rice, beans, bread and drinks.

“We’ve been helping the community out around here since we got here,” she said. “A lot of our customers would give us money to help feed the hungry, and we decided to put that money toward a Thanksgiving meal.”

Slaughter said everyone is invited to join in the meal, and takeout and dine-in are both available.

“We really would like for them to feel comfortable, sit down and break bread with us,” Slaughter said. “This is more than just a plate of food. This is an opportunity to build community.”
