Lakeland looks to be more competitive

The Lakeland High School girls’ basketball team hopes for a more competitive season than last year.
The Lady Cavs will be entering their second season under Coach Daryl Rountree. Last season was tough for Lakeland from a competitive aspect; however, they hope for a different outcome this year.
“We are extremely young this year,” Rountree said. “We lost a couple of seniors from last year’s team, so we will have some growing up to do.”
Lakeland will add a couple of players from junior varsity, and Rountree is excited to see how they do on the varsity level. In the offseason, Lakeland competed in summer league, and Rountree believed his team played well and held its own. Rountree knows in order for Lakeland to remain consistently competitive, the team will have to stay the course.
“We are going to have to trust the process,” Rountree said. “It’s going to get tough at times, but we are going to have to keep playing hard and trusting in our development.”
In a tough Southeastern District, the Lady Cavs will see good opponents from the top of the district to the bottom.
Rountree personally feels more comfortable going into this season with the girls. He feels the team is used to him and vice-versa. Lakeland will get things started Thursday when they take on Kellam High School.
