“Helping Hands” wanted on Saturday

Suffolk Sheriff’s deputies need citizens to do their part on Saturday and be “Helping Hands” for elementary school students this Christmas season.
The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office will hold its fifth annual toy drive dubbed “Operation Helping Hands,” with deputies at the entrances of the Suffolk Walmart stores located at 6259 College Drive and 1200 N. Main St. this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Joined by high school volunteers, the deputies are asking for generous donors to provide new, unwrapped toys that are suitable for elementary school-aged children, according to Sheriff E.C. Harris, although any firearm replicas are discouraged.
These will be distributed on Dec. 17 to students at Oakland, Pioneer and Elephant’s Fork elementary schools. The gifts will be distributed to the neediest children whose families are struggling to afford Christmas presents this year.
“I hear it often in our city right now, that there’s a lot of people struggling,” Harris said. “It’s important to do what we can and make sure the littles ones get something for Christmas.”
