Goldie Davis Riddick Hines, 96, was called home by our Lord on Dec. 11, 2018, in Suffolk. She was born in Conway, N.C., to the late Arlie Barnes and Magnus C. Davis. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Richard Riddick; an infant son; brother, William E. Davis Sr.; and sister, Arline Davis Morris.
She graduated from Lakeview Hospital School of Nursing in Suffolk in 1946 as a registered nurse. Goldie was a longtime active member of Liberty Spring Christian Church and the Ladies Bible Class. She was a deacon emeritus and the first woman to serve on the Board of Trustees. Through the years she served as Sunday School superintendent, on various committees and actively enjoyed being a member of the Women’s Fellowship. She loved her church family, and the congregation voted her Mother of the Year in 1986. She was a charter member of Suffolk Women of the Moose, Chapter 1315.
Goldie loved flowers and gardening. Passersby still remark on seeing her on the lawn mower, gardening, or raking and burning leaves well into her late 80s. Laughingly, she was on a first-name basis with the firefighters. Famous for her country cooking, she was known most for her homemade biscuits, chicken salad, potato salad and butter beans. Countless family and friends consider themselves blessed to have sat at her table.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Mary Riddick Branch and Betty Jean Riddick; three grandsons, R. Craig Branch and wife, Beth, John R. Branch and Jeremy L. Branch; two great-grandchildren, Austin Branch and Autumn Branch; former husband, Sidney L. Hines, all of Suffolk; numerous special cousins, nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Robert T. Morris Sr., of Emporia.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, by the Rev. Res Spears and the Rev. Tommy Reynolds in the Liberty Spring Christian Church, 4213 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434, with a reception to follow. Following the reception, interment will be held in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk.
Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Spring Christian Church Memorial Fund. Condolences may be registered at RWBakerFH.com.
A special thank you from the family to Suffolk Fire & Rescue, staff at Sentara Obici Hospital, and Heartland Hospice for their care and support over the years.
