Gary Ward is continuing to help the homeless from behind bars after his wife and daughter donated blankets in his name to the Salvation Army last Friday.

Ward is a convicted felon who is currently incarcerated at the Greensville Correctional Center. But he wants to give back, and his family is helping him do it.

“Gary has a heart of gold. He made a mistake by going to jail, but he is trying to give back,” said Ward’s wife, Phyllis Ward. “Arnisa and I are trying to help him succeed with some of his goals.”

Phyllis purchased 25 blankets and 25 hats to donate, and she was more than happy to purchase them with her own money.

“I don’t struggle, and I do all of this by myself,” Phyllis said. “My husband said I can’t keep anything, because I always want to give. I have a heart of gold.”

Blankets and hats were a perfect item with the cold winter setting in.

“We know that the homeless may need a blanket and a hat to put on, and hopefully it can keep them warm,” Phyllis said. “We want to keep doing this every two or three months.”

The family also donated food at Thanksgiving time. They plan to keep up with donations every few months, and the donations will vary based on the month.
