New Year’s Eve festivities may be over, but there’s still plenty of reasons for Virginia drivers to celebrate, AAA Tidewater Virginia announced on Thursday.

Gas prices in Virginia are the cheapest that they’ve been since December 2016. According to the press release, the average price for a gallon in Virginia was $2.05 on Thursday, which was 22 cents less than last month and a 24-cent decrease from last year.

Hampton Roads was one area of the state that actually saw its average drop below $2 per gallon. On Thursday, the average price per gallon in Hampton Roads was $1.97. That’s 22 cents less than last month and a 30-cent drop compared to last year, according to the press release.

“With OPEC production cuts slated to take effect this week, analysts will closely be watching the price of oil,” AAA spokeswoman Georjeane Blumling stated in the press release. “Significant movement toward higher market prices would mean cheaper gas prices could be in the rearview mirror.

“However, AAA expects to see minimal volatility at the start of the cartel’s production cuts.”

Gasbuddy.com on Thursday recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from $1.99 to as low as $1.86, a welcome drop from the $2.19 to $1.97 range that was recorded on Dec. 11.
