City Council will consider the elimination of five of its six standing committees during Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

The committees — finance, public safety, education, health and human relations, economic development and land use, housing and transportation — were created in 2009. The city is looking to terminate all but the finance committee.

City Manager Patrick Roberts sent a letter to City Council on Dec. 19 recommending the five remaining standing committees be eliminated. They “have not served Council as originally contemplated by staff’s recommendation at the time,” Roberts stated.

Roberts, according to the letter, believes that the City Council’s time can be better used during the scheduled work sessions that are held prior to the regular meetings.

“I believe that Council and the public would be better served by a greater utilization of Council’s scheduled work sessions in order to bring staff reports or matters or emerging importance up for discussion throughout the year,” the letter stated.

Along with eliminating the five committees, the letter also states that the city’s financial advisor has recommended that the finance committee meet quarterly rather than monthly.

This change would coincide with the quarterly budget and financial reports, according to the letter.

The change is listed on the consent agenda. Wednesday’s meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in City Council chambers.
