Dance for moms and sons next month

Mothers and their sons can enjoy dancing and fun at the Planters Club for Suffolk Parks and Recreation’s third annual Mother Son Dance next month.

“I think for us, the importance of family is big, and we are all about making memories,” said Rickeda Fofana, youth and outreach coordinator for Suffolk Parks and Recreation. “This is an opportunity for mothers to bring out their sons and get that two for one — an opportunity for a good night out and an opportunity to have fun.”

The idea of a mother-and-son dance was sparked from the traditional father-daughter dances. Fofana has a son of her own, and she felt that it was the perfect opportunity for moms to spend quality time with their sons.

“The first year I came up with the event happened, because there were two or three other events that were going on that featured fathers and daughters,” Fofana said. “For me, as a mother of a son, I would love to get the same experience to have their favorite guy out for an evening of dancing.”

Mothers and their sons can expect an evening of dancing and heavy hors d’oeuvres with the Nansemond River as scenery.

“It’s a great venue, and it has the perfect dance floor,” Fofana said. “We even have photographers, and they can take pictures over the water.”

The photographs taken at the event will be available for purchase.

The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Planters Club, 4600 Planters Club Road. Families must register by Feb. 15 at the Parks and Recreation Administrative office, 134 S. Sixth St. Registration is $25 per family.
