Rosevell Towns

Rosevell Towns, affectionately known as “Jake,” departed this life on Jan. 22, 2019, at Sentara Obici Hospital. He attended Suffolk Public Schools.

Jake was employed for 17 years by Starr Motors in the service department.

During his early years, he sang in a gospel quartet with his brothers called “Jack and the Mods,” and he was a drummer in a group with his brothers called “The New Mighty Clouds of Joy.”

He was predeceased by his parents, the late Raymond Lee Towns Sr. and Lillie Mae Harden-Towns; and three sisters, Betty Jean Harden-Simms, Rosa Lee Towns and Catherine Towns.

He is survived by one son, Elder Corey Porter Sr.; one daughter, Jaquay Taylor; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Raymond Towns Jr., John Towns, Roy Lee Towns and Ricky Towns; three sisters, Margaret Lawrence-Towns, Mary Jean Towns and Eva Mae Towns-Hinton; a very devoted friend of many years, Ms. Carolyn Ricks; and a best friend, Monty Hillard.

Mr. Town’s visitation will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019, at Gates of Heaven COGIC, and he will be laid to rest at Carver Memorial Cemetery.
