Nansemond River High School and Kecoughtan High School will square off in the first round of the Class 5 Region A tournament Tuesday night.
With the schools having the same mascot, it will be the clash of the Warriors at Green Run High School Tuesday night. As the fourth seed in the region, Nansemond River will be making its first appearance in the region tournament in six years. The Warriors finished their season with a 15-7 record, winning 10 more games than they did last season. They have won 11 of their last 13 games and are feeling good about themselves going into the playoffs.
“It’s going to be a good matchup for us,” Coach Ed Young said. “At this point in the season, there are no bad teams. If we stay focused, we feel good about ourselves.”
There has been a lot of adversity with the Nansemond River team this season. Young dealt with the loss of his mother in the middle of the season and had to step away from the team for a little while. He gives a lot of credit to his team, coaches and the NRHS community as a whole for the support he and the team received throughout the season.
“I’m very appreciative of my coaches and players and the support we have gotten from the fans,” Young said. “It feels good to be back to where we used to be.”
Kecoughtan comes into the game with a 14-8 record and has won two out of its last three games. If the Warriors win, they will move on to play in the regional semifinal at the Norfolk Scope.
“Even though it’s been a while, we don’t want to be happy we made it,” Young said. “We want to go out to compete and hopefully make it to a region championship.”
Nansemond River will face Kecoughtan at Green Run High School at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
