Healthy Suffolk is offering a community garden program for those that love gardening, but don’t have the space for one.

Participants can “Adopt-a-Bed” this year at the East Suffolk Community Garden, located at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 S. Sixth St. There are eight raised beds available for adoption as of Tuesday, according to a city press release.

Each bed is more than 10 feet long, three-and-a-half feet wide and one-and-a-half feet high. Each are ready and filled with compost and soil.

The program is open to any family, church group, business or other organization for the calendar year, with the option of extending the adoption into next year. Adoptions of beds are free as long as they maintain their vegetables, fruit and flowers throughout the year.

“We hope to see families and friends having fun and learning about plants and food,” Shelley Barlow, director of the community garden program, stated in the press release. “Adoptees do not have to have any previous gardening experience. We will help with advice and have free workshops to make the experience more enjoyable.”

Those that have completed the survey will be invited to a short orientation at the garden. There will be no fixed schedule and all planning, maintaining and harvesting will be up to each group.
