The Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team had two players represent the Warriors on the Class 5 Region A teams.

The Warriors recently finished up one of their best seasons in the last seven years. Nansemond River reached the regional tournament for the first time since 2019 and went in with the No. 4 seed. After defeating Kecoughtan High School in an overtime thriller, the Warriors went on to advance to the Class 5 Region A semifinals against Green Run High School. In a classic matchup, it took a buzzer-beater to send the underdog Warriors home.

However, because of their play and body of work all season throughout the region, the Warriors had two players selected All-Region. Senior Jeremiah Lewis and junior Justin Fatherly were both selected All-Region, with Lewis making the first team and Fatherly making second team.

As a first team representative, Lewis averaged a double-double this season with 14.7 points per game and 11.8 rebounds a game to go along with two blocked shots. Lewis was also a first team All-District selection this season as well.

“He really goes at it hard,” Coach Ed Young said. “We play him a little bit out of position, but he has a willingness to work. This is his second straight year averaging a double-double, and he is a good student as well. He’s had an outstanding high school career here.”

Fatherly made the second team after becoming a big scoring threat for the Warriors this season. He averaged around 17 points per game and had five games where he scored 20 points or more.

“He is someone who wants to get better,” Young said. “He is going to be a key guy for us next season. He’s made himself into a fine young player.”

Nansemond River ended up winning 10 more games than they did all last season. Young was a vote short of being selected regional Coach of the Year.

“We had a great season, and these guys worked so hard,” Young said. “After winning six games last year, we had a solid season. Those guys continued to get better through the season, and that’s what you want.”
