Virginia motorists have enjoyed gas prices that are considerably lower than the national average, even as other states are experiencing higher prices at pumps, AAA Tidewater Virginia announced on Monday.

The price for a gallon of gas in Virginia was $2.20 on Monday, which was roughly 23 cents cheaper than the national average, according to the press release. Prices steadily rose across the country in February when a number of refineries underwent planned and unplanned maintenance, combined with an increase in crude oil prices.

The national average on Monday was $2.42, according to the press release, which was three cents more expensive than last week and 17 cents more than last month, but 10 cents cheaper than the same time last year.

“Pump prices have been pushed higher this week due to reduced gasoline stock levels and increased demand,” Georjeane Blumling, AAA Tidewater Virginia spokeswoman, stated in the press release. “Although Virginia is the seventh least expensive state for gas, motorists can expect gas prices to continue to increase as refineries gear up for spring gasoline production and maintenance season.”

Gasbuddy.com on Tuesday recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from $2.19 to as low as $2.07, a sharp uptick compared to the $2.06-to-$1.89 range that was recorded on Feb. 11.
