Hazmat spill on Nansemond Parkway closes road

Part of Nansemond Parkway was closed for hours Thursday as crews cleaned up a hazardous materials spill.

The spill resulted from a single-vehicle crash that was reported at 10:48 a.m. in the 4500 block of Nansemond Parkway. There were no injuries, according to a city press release.

Preliminary investigation found the truck was traveling on Nansemond Parkway when the driver over-corrected and went into the ditch, where a portable tank containing “a large quantity” of lawn insecticides spilled, the press release stated.

First responders contained the spill, according to the press release, and said there was no danger to the public or waterways.

A Virginia Emergency Management Hazardous Material Officer also responded to assist the clean-up efforts.

Nansemond Parkway was closed at Driver Lane and Suffolk Meadows Boulevard, and detour signage was in place. The roadway was closed for several hours.
