AAA Tidewater Virginia announced on Monday that gas prices across Virginia have increased by 40 cents since the start of 2019.

The average price for unleaded gas on Monday was $2.45 per gallon, a 25-cent increase from last month and just two cents less than last year. Gas prices in other parts of Virginia are a bit higher, as well.

The average price for a gallon in Hampton Roads was $2.46 on Monday, a 29-cent increase from last month and two cents apart from last year’s price.

The national gas price average was $2.69. While that’s seven cents more expensive than the previous week and 27 cents more than last month, it’s still only four cents more expensive than last year.

“Three months ago, motorists could find gas for less than $2.50 at most gas stations. Today, you can only find gas for that price at one-third of stations, which is likely giving sticker shock to motorists across the country,” AAA spokeswoman Katharine Beachboard stated in the press release. “Gasoline stocks have been steadily decreasing since early February, causing spikes at the pump that are likely to continue for the coming weeks.”

Gasbuddy.com on Tuesday recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from $2.49 to as low as $2.35, which is a sizable increase compared to a sharp uptick compared to the $2.29-to-$2.14 range that was recorded on March 12.
