Keep Suffolk Beautiful’s annual spring Recycling Drive and Tire Amnesty Day will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lowe’s parking lot at 1216 N. Main St.

This event will take place in partnership with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Suffolk Lions Club and with support from Goodwill, TFC Recycling, Iron Mountain and the Southeastern Public Service Authority.

Suffolk residents may dispose of CFL bulbs, car batteries and other batteries, electronics, cardboard, plastic bags, glass containers and cans. Old televisions and mattresses will not be accepted, as these can be placed out on trash collection day for safe disposal by Suffolk Public Works Refuse Division.

Goodwill will also accept gently used clothing and electronics, and document shredding will be available with a maximum of three grocery bags’ worth per citizen.

The drive will also include the disposal of household hazardous waste items such as paint, oil, cleaners and pesticides. This waste disposal will be limited to five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste per citizen.

Tires may be recycled as long as they’re no more than 22 inches in diameter and without rims. Suffolk residents will need to provide identification for tire recycling and household hazardous waste disposal.

Suffolk Mosquito Control will share information on controlling mosquito populations at home and give away packs of Mosquito Dunks to Suffolk residents with IDs.

The Foodbank will accept donations of canned food, boxed meals, baby food and wipes, while Suffolk Lions Club members will collect old hearing aids and eyeglasses.

“If anybody comes out and drops some stuff out for the recycling drive, if they wouldn’t mind bringing along a little donation for the Foodbank — just a can of something to pay it forward a little bit,” said Wayne Jones of Keep Suffolk Beautiful. “We just want to get as much food as we can and as many eyeglasses as we can.”

This event is part of the Great American Cleanup campaign that Keep America Beautiful launches nationwide every spring. Keep Suffolk Beautiful is asking residents, businesses and organizations to join volunteers for beautification projects across Suffolk and Hampton Roads on May 3 and 4.
