Two upcoming Relay for Life of Suffolk fundraisers will offer participants friendly competition and tasty meats, respectively.

The second annual Suffolk Relay for Life Golf Tournament sponsored by Titan Contractors Inc. will tee off to once again raise money for the fight against cancer and support the search for a cure. The tournament will be held on May 3 at the Sleepy Hole Golf Course, 4700 Sleepy Hole Road.

The format will be four-person Florida Best Ball, and participants ages 65 and older will hit from senior tees. There will be up to three flights of teams based on the total number registered, with about 15 teams registered as of Tuesday, according to Kathy Carraway, co-day of event lead for Relay for Life of Suffolk.

Registration and practice will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Players may each purchase up to two mulligans during the tournament at $5 per mulligan.

A dinner and awards ceremony will immediate follow the tournament’s completion. Prizes will be given to the first and second place from each flight. There will also be door prizes and contests for closest-to-the-pin and the longest drive.

Last year’s golf tournament raised roughly $10,000, Carraway said, and the goal is for this tournament to raise at least $15,000 for this year’s Relay, the theme of which is “Passport for a Cure — Relay around the World.”

“Our golf tournament is a way to come together to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer,” Carraway said.

Registration will cost $75 per person, $200 for hole sponsors, $300 for teams of four players and $425 for drink cart sponsors. The deadline for registration is May 1.

Registration and payment may be mailed to Titan Contractors Inc. with attention to Relay for Life Golf Tournament, 3919 Nansemond Parkway, Suffolk, VA 23435. Checks must be made payable to Relay for Life of Suffolk.

For registration and other information, contact day of event co-leads Jim Gudac at jim@titangc.com or 335-1446, or Kathy Carraway at bid@titangc.com or 621-0064.

Titans Contractors Inc. is also accepting orders for its pork butts and ribs fundraiser to support Relay for Life of Suffolk. Prepared by “BBQ Pitmasters” J.C. Patterson and Jimmy Franks, the pork butts cost $25 each and the pork ribs $20 each. Only pre-orders will be accepted, and they must be made by May 14.

Orders will be picked up from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Suffolk Relay that will be held this May at Nansemond River High School. Call Gudac or Carraway to place an order, or by emailing bid@titangc.com or faxing to 538-0400. Credit cards are accepted, as are checks made payable to ACS-Relay for Life.

Relay for Life of Suffolk will be held on May 18 at Nansemond River High School, 3301 Nansemond Parkway.

Survivors and supporters alike will be engaged from noon to 10 p.m. with laps around the school track, fundraising activities held by different teams, live entertainment and food vendors.

Following the opening ceremony at noon, there will be non-stop laps that will include survivor and caregiver laps, along with festive alternatives to keep people moving.

There will also be the lighting of the luminarias at 9 p.m. to remember those that have been lost to cancer. Bags are available for purchase online for $10 and on the day of the event as well. These will be personalized to honor loved ones and placed around the track for participants to walk among the candlelit memorials.

As of Tuesday evening, about $35,665 has been raised towards this year’s $150,000 goal, with 32 days to go. Visit relayforlife.org/suffolkva for upcoming deadlines and updates to the event’s schedule. Registration for the event is free.
